Jamaica series in Nat Geo Traveller UK magazine
I’m particularly happy about these spreads, as after some time on the shelf, this story about my reggae pilgrimage to Jamaica finally found a home, laid out over 9 pages in the UK National Geographic Traveller. It’s nice to see a mainstream travel magazine running a feature like this, and they were pleased to do something a bit different too. In the shops now.
Boomtown walkabout film
You can see a short video piece I did for the Carnival parade at Boomtown festival this summer here, take a look:
Ka’apor tribe mindoc on New Internationalist
The short webdoc video that myself and Ruy Sposati made in Brazil earlier this year, is now published on New Internationalist
According to the Imazon research institute, the Brazilian lumber industry is valued at around $1.6 billion per year, and of this a whopping 76% is harvested illegally. The region’s Ka’apor indigenous community has been up against an ongoing battle with illegal loggers for many years.
Sao Paulo skyline
Yes Rio has the beach and the jungle and the weather, and Sao Paulo is a concrete jungle like no other, on the surface an ugly grey metropolis, but dig a bit deeper and there’s a lot more to the place than meets the eye, it’s not all about looks you know…
I’m back in England at the moment, but I think of you often Brazil, Eu voltarei em breve meu amigo.
Rio city guide in this month’s National Geographic Traveller
In this month’s National Geographic Traveller UK is my eighth feature for the magazine, this time it’s about a place I know well – a city guide to my adopted second home of Rio de Janeiro. Sandwiched in between the World Cup and the Olympics next year, and struggling with an economic downturn, the ‘cidade marvelosa’ (marvelous city) still shines brightly and remains a top destination, whether you’re looking for great beaches, music or a joie de vivre that is difficult to find anywhere else.
Rio Rap featured in the Washington Post
A couple of picture excerpt from the story I have been working on for some time now about the underground hip-hop scene in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro is in the Washington Post this week, with a great text written by my collaborator Dom Phillips, Brazil correspondent for the Post.
Summer Solstice at Glastonbury with Arcadia
It’s that time of year again, the longest day of the year in the UK, so here’s to wish you all a happy summer solstice! I spent mine on site here at Glastonbury festival, where I’m currently shooting the setup and performance practices for Arcadia – which for anyone who doesn’t know is a giant spider stage, made of reclaimed metal, that has lazers for eyes and shoots fire out of the top, with aerial performers hanging from various points on it. They’ve added loads to the show this year, which I’ll also be photographing, more coming soon…
International Women’s day
To celebrate International Women’s Day, here’s a picture of a strong and powerful woman, Olga is a weaver from Teotitlan in Oaxaca, Mexico. The photo is from a story I just finished shooting about this region, that has been famous for it’s artisans for centuries, and these crafts and culture are still continuing today.
Helping them along is a small organisation called En Via, who provide interest free micro finance for women to set up or develop their businesses, as well as financial education and support groups. They also provide community tourism, where 100% of the money from the tours go directly into financing the loans. http://www.envia.org/
Free to Party on Issuu

Zoite Coiteco (Coite) Carnival celebrations in Chiapas, Mexico
Here’s a few photos from the Zoite Coiteco Carnival celebrations this week in the small town of Ocozocoaulta de Espinosa in Chiapas, Mexico (or Coite as it’s known locally for obvious reasons).
